Yesterday was not an easy day for us as we went for Oscar’s 3rd check at the HIDA Scan at 8am. As we walked down to Nuclear Medicine in my mind I was pleading, “Please Lord have the bile move.” Watching the scan it at first seemed uncertain if our prayers were answered but then you could tell nothing had changed. This was confirmed when the doctors rounded around 11am and got the report from radiology that the bile had not moved and there seems to be an obstruction.
What this means is that if the obstruction is not fixed Oscar will go into liver failure. This was hard news to hear. In utero, we heard about Oscar’s problems with his heart, lung, brain, kidneys...but the organ that is going to lead to his demise will more than likely be his liver. In about 2 hours Oscar will get 5+ml of blood drawn to be sent to the lab for panels. From there the doctors will review previous panels and today’s to see how the liver is functioning. Our prayer is that the numbers have not changed much since Monday.
Some praises from today. Oscar is becoming more babyish and seems to be engaging with his eyes and hands. He is starting to sleep with his mouth closed which helps keep his little mouth moist and I think with his respiration’s too. He is fussing when he has a dirty diaper as well. Last Brian, Theodore, and I went home for dinner together tonight. It was nice to be a family, but my heart ached to have Oscar home with us too.
Here is some information on Oscar’s liver condition. It is called Biliary Atresia. The procedure/surgery that would need to be done is called a Kasai and there are 3 different types.
If we decide surgery is the route for Oscar we will more than likely be transferred to Mott’s at U of M or Cincinnati Children’s.
